Akela Conditioning is a Community driven Gym that was born during my time as a Royal Marines Commando.
After a long injury resulting in hip surgery I managed to bring myself back up to fitness through spending hours in the gym with a friend after work. This is where I fell in love with functional fitness. We taught ourselves how to Olympic Lift, perform gymnastic skills such as muscle-ups and handstand walks and cheered each other on through gruelling workouts.
The Marines showed me the importance of team work when things get hard and the enjoyment of taking on a challenge with like-minded people.
Upon leaving the Royal Marines it become obvious to me what my next move should be. I wanted to make a positive difference to people’s lives. I was never going to be a brain surgeon or a scientist but I could help people by giving them the tools to live a healthier life.
I started to run boot camps on Minchinhampton Common and hold 1-2-1 sessions from my garage. The boot camps grew in popularity and it was obvious we needed a permanent home.
After a long search I finally came across a quirky little basement unit that oozed potential. Akela Conditioning found its home.
The doors opened on the 2nd of January 2019 and our first class was fully booked. From then on the Wolf Pack has been growing from strength to strength. We have seen countless firsts in the gym. First burpees, double unders, pull-ups and people learning new skills such as Olympic lifting. Most importantly we have seen positive change to the people’s lives who have walked through our doors.
